Bulgaria’s Glavbolgarstroy and its partners reported on the progress of their international research project MOBICCON-PRO at a meeting in Brussels. The project is being developed by a consortium of partners from France, Belgium, Denmark, Bulgaria and Serbia and is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme.
Project progress meetings are held regularly every six months and are a key element of the project management mechanism, helping to identify challenges and solutions in a timely manner. They also provide an opportunity to exchange ideas and plan the next steps, both in terms of achieving the project objectives in particular and in the broader context of the circular economy and sustainable construction.
During the meeting, the project partners visited the recycling center of the Belgian G & A De Meuter – a leader in the processing of construction waste and materials from demolished buildings. The company, established in 1977, is one of the leaders in the field of earthmoving and demolition works. It operates the two main recycling centers in the Brussels region.
The recycling center in Grimbergen, taking up an area of 8 hectares, receives hundreds of tons of inert construction waste, which, after processing, is used as a substitute for primary materials in the construction process.
At the sorting center in Neder-over-Heembeek, construction waste undergoes mechanical and manual sorting, resulting in high-quality and reusable materials. The company also actively invests in innovation and recycling technologies, which allows it to achieve high levels of processing of incoming quantities and minimize the need for landfilling residual waste.
The presence of the MOBICCON-PRO team on site is a valuable opportunity to learn about the innovative processes for collecting, sorting and recycling construction waste into valuable resources.
The meeting also discussed the activities of the already established Territorial Cluster Center, which functions as a hub for cooperation, knowledge exchange and resource management. It is administratively located in Sofia and is supported by consortium members, as well as municipalities, NGOs, small and medium-sized enterprises and academic institutions.
The final phase of the MOBICCON-PRO project
The project team also reported on the final phase of commissioning and testing of the mobile pilot plant for processing inert construction and demolition waste, located in Sofia, which is designed to recycle materials directly on site. The meeting also highlighted the potential of innovative construction products created from recycled fractions, as part of efforts to change existing construction practices towards sustainable ones.
The demonstration and validation of the practical application of the solutions developed within the MOBICCON-PRO project were discussed. In addition, the partners focused on selective demolition practices and technologies used to improve resource recovery during dismantling, as part of efforts to promote circular construction.
Upcoming project activities will include additional training sessions, technical visits and pilot demonstrations, which will ensure the continued development of the initiative and the realization of the set goals.
