The Ministry of Finance is open to the idea of subsidies for electric vehicles
Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova emphasized that this should be done in line with fiscal consolidation goals

The Ministry of Finance (MF) is ready to discuss specific proposals and measures to promote electric mobility in Bulgaria. This was stated by Finance Minister Temenuzhka Petkova during today's parliamentary control. Her comment was in response to a question from Petar Petrov, a member of the “Vazrazhdane” party, who asked why there are no subsidies for the purchase of new cars or electric vehicles.
Such measures should be considered within the overall policy for promoting electric mobility. They must be in line with the state's spending priorities and the actual capacity to effectively absorb these funds and achieve the set goals,” Petkova said.
She recalled that Bulgaria has already introduced tax breaks for owners of electric cars. Back in 2013, electric vehicles were exempted from vehicle tax. In 2015 and 2018, electric motorcycles, mopeds, and electric vehicles of certain categories were also exempted from tax.
The tax exemption applied in our country is a serious preference,” Petkova said.
She added that the introduction of purchase subsidies depends on each EU member state and that such a decision must be taken in line with “actions aimed at achieving fiscal consolidation of the budget.”
According to Petkova, European countries with such relief measures include Greece, Romania, France, Germany, and Hungary.
