Over €10 million from European funds will be invested in the major renovation of the first 10 km of the secondary road II-11 — better known as the panoramic Danube Road. The route begins at the strategic intersection near the town of Dunavtsi (where it branches off from the main E-79 highway) and extends to the village of Botevo. This is the main thoroughfare connecting the Vidin region with the riverside settlements and the city of Lom.
The rehabilitation is funded under the “Regional Development” Program 2021 – 2027.
Currently the RIA is conducting a public procurement procedure to select a contractor for engineering (design and construction). The procedure is currently in the stage of reviewing the submitted bids. The estimated value of the project is over €10.3 million excluding VAT.
The future contractor will have 90 d to prepare the technical design and 360 d for the actual execution of the construction works.
The section between the Dunavtsi town intersection and the village of Botevo (from km 0 to km 9.990) is vital for the region, as it provides daily access for residents of the villages of Simeonovo, Botevo and Archar to administrative and social services. In addition to benefiting the local population the repair is of strategic importance for improving transport connectivity with the Republic of Serbia and supporting economic development and tourism along the Danube River.
What will be done?
The project involves a complete restoration of the road’s load-bearing capacity and the laying of new pavement. Three major intersections – for the towns and villages of Dunavtsi, Simeonovo and Botevo – will undergo major repairs, along with one bridge and several smaller structures. The construction of modern drainage systems is planned to ensure the durability of the repairs and greater safety for drivers.
With the implementation of the project the municipality of Vidin will gain a safer and more modern infrastructure. This will lead to a reduction in harmful emissions through smoother traffic flow and will improve travel comfort in one of the most important economic zones in northwestern Bulgaria.
