The race for the best European projects has begun
Applications for Regiostars 2026 are now open, and documents must be submitted by May 22
Brussels has officially launched the campaign for the prestigious REGIOSTARS 2026 awards, which recognize the most innovative and impactful projects implemented with the support of the European Cohesion Policy. Until May 22, 2026, beneficiaries from across the European Union can submit their applications to compete for the "quality label" and wide international recognition.
Since its creation in 2008 by the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO), the REGIOSTARS competition has established itself as the highest level of recognition for projects that bring real change to citizens and local communities. In 2026, the focus is once again on initiatives that have not only achieved their goals but also have the potential to be applied as a successful model in other regions of Europe.
Who can participate?
The competition is open to beneficiaries with completed projects co-financed by key European funds:
- European Regional Development Fund (ERDF);
- European Social Fund (ESF);
- Cohesion Fund (CF);
- Just Transition Fund;
- Interreg cross-border cooperation programs (2014 – 2020 and 2021 – 2027 periods).
Five paths to success
Projects will compete in five categories that reflect the EU's strategic development goals:
- Competitive and smart Europe – innovation and digitalization;
- Green Europe – ecological transition and sustainability;
- Connected Europe – transport and digital connectivity;
- Social and inclusive Europe – education, employment, and healthcare;
- Europe closer to its citizens – sustainable urban and local development.
The selection process and the final in Brussels
All applications will be evaluated by an independent jury composed of leading academic experts. They will select the finalists, who will be announced during the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels in October. In addition to the professional jury, the general public will also have a say – the winner of the "Audience Award" will be determined by online voting.
The winners will receive not only a statuette, but also a specialized communication campaign to promote their success at European level.
Important dates and steps
Interested parties must submit their applications via the EU Survey platform no later than May 22, 2026. Each application must be accompanied by an official letter of support from the relevant Managing Authority.
For anyone who has questions about the criteria and process, an online information session will be held on February 24 at 2:30 p.m. (CET).
