50% of household electricity will come from Maritsa East 2 Thermal Power Plant
Coal-fired electricity will be supplied to households through a public tender
TPP Maritsa East 2 will supply nearly 50% of the energy for household consumers in Bulgaria from the new regulatory period – July 1, 2025. This was announced by Energy Minister Zhecho Stankov at a briefing with journalists, quoted by BTA.
Electricity from coal will be provided to households through a public tender on the Bulgarian Independent Energy Exchange (IBEX) after the liberalization of the wholesale market. The three electricity distribution companies have already published the tenders for their electricity needs for the coming year, but no participants have yet come forward to sell it to them.
The plant is currently operating with one and a half units, but from July 1, capacity will be increased by 100%.
If necessary, five units can be put into operation, which will be repaired. Thanks to the new one-year mechanism, the plant, together with the others in the mix, will produce 6 million megawatt hours, which in turn will guarantee work for coal mining, because 10 million tons of coal will have to be extracted to supply electricity to domestic consumers," the minister said.
According to him, this means long-term operation of the power plants in the region, which will secure the jobs of over 6,000 people employed there.
This proves once again that the heart of Bulgarian energy lies right here, in the Maritsa basin," said the minister.
He added that, as Minister of Energy, he guarantees financial stability and long-term operation of the power plants.
