Everyone who buys coffee from Starbucks in Bulgaria will now pay a fee of 10 stotinki (0.05 euros) for the disposable cups. The additional cost will be added to the beverages regardless of whether they are served in plastic or cardboard cups. The new rule is already in effect.
The funds collected this way for one year will be donated to the nature protection organization WWF in support of its mission to expand the network of protected areas in Bulgaria, as WWF Bulgaria reports.
Single-use plastic is something that society today recognizes as a problem much more than ever before. With our joint initiative, we want to raise people's awareness of the need to reduce waste and encourage the formation of behavior that will benefit the planet," commented Ivan Georgiev, Starbucks operations director for Bulgaria.
Eco future
In 2019, Starbucks stopped using plastic straws and replaced them with cardboard ones. Special lids were also introduced for cups that did not require the use of straws.
Various types of reusable cups are also available at Starbucks locations in Bulgaria, and the additional fee will not be charged for them. Starbucks further specifies that all customers who decide to bring their own cup will receive a discount of 50 stotinki (0.25 euros) from the price of their beverage.
The American coffee company recently announced a change in part of its business model in Bulgaria. Starbucks plans to open a new type of establishment in the country - the so-called drive-through. It is a service provided by a business that allows customers to buy products without leaving their cars.
